There is also information regarding the family's views on the Civil War, including Virginia's decision on secession. One of the letters is written by William C. Danner to his sister while he was imprisoned at Johnson's Island, a Union prison camp which is located in Sandusky Bay of Lake Erie.

William Sydnor Thomson, Confederate soldier, lawyer, and educator, was born 12 April 1843, in Summit Point, Jefferson County, Virginia (now West Virginia), and died 22 December 1913, in Atlanta, Georgia. Thomson taught in Calhoun County in East Tennessee (1860), served with the 12th Virginia Cavalry during the Civil War, moved to Marietta, Georgia, after the war, and was admitted to the Georgia bar in 1866.
